Mountain Biking is just in the initial stages in Bhutan. A hand full of off-road trails exist in western Bhutan - Thimphu, Punakha and Wanduephodrang.
Currently a majority of the tourists visiting Bhutan for mountain biking are touring across Bhutan on the National Highway. The national highway stretches west to east covering roughly 645km of winding mountain roads. Due to the terrain and the roads winding their way around the tight corners and up to mountain passes the average vehicle travels between 25 to 35 kilometers per hour. With few cars, courteous and cautious drivers and the speed of travel, cycling across Bhutan on a bike is a pleasant experience.
Interact with locals, passing monks and school children as you experience Bhutan by bike. It is not a race, go at your own pace and if you get tired just flag our vehicle down and hitch a lift until you are ready to get back on your bike. Mountain bikes are available for rent in Bhutan however we highly recommend all guests to bring their own bikes. All bike trips will be accompanied by an experienced guide and a vehicle. No panniers, trailers or backpacks will be required. All nights will be based in a hotel.
